Day 7 - Estella to Los Arcos - 22 km.

We had the best breakfast today! Last night we stocked up for the day, this morning we cooked bacon and eggs, plus we had strawberries, orange juice, and pastry. We made the dining room smell like bacon. And those other poor pilgrims we eating bread and jam. And for lunch we made buns with bacon, salami and cheese. So good! This all cost the same as a pilgrim breakfast. Way better!

So we set out for the day at about 7:15. Made it to the Irache Wine fountain by 8:00 am. This is a winery by a monastery where there is a water tap AND a wine tap! Awesome. It was a little early for wine but we had a taste and saved a small bottle for later. If you go to www.irache.com there is a webcam where you can watch the pilgrims have a taste.

The rest of walk today was great. I know it’s all relative but I would say this was our easiest day so far. Rolling hills, crops and vineyards. We walked through a couple small towns, then there was a gap 12 km before our destination. So we made sure to have a bathroom break. And a coffee.

Back on the road and we were looking for at least a tree for some shade and we came upon the best sight - a food truck oasis! Actually a trailer with sandwiches and drinks, plus tables in the shade. Fabulous! "Dos coca cola por favor", for Rachel and I - plus we had our bacon and cheese sandwiches now.

Another 6 km and we arrived on Los Arcos. There was even a petting zoo on the way in to town. Easy to find the Casa de Austria Albergue. Very casual place and we were able to get a room for 4. As well as Spanish beer they have German wheat beer. Yummy.

The usual shower, laundry, relax routine, and a quick walk around town. Los Arcos. Named for archers, not arches as I first thought. I was looking everywhere for the “Golden Arches” - no McDonalds here.

Taking it easy right now. In a bit we will venture out either for tapas and drinks, or a pilgrim meal. Also want to check out the cathedral, looks great!

Today‘s lesson: you can eat great food on a small budget if your Albergue has a pilgrim kitchen.

Cafe con Leche 1 Euro

Coke 2 E

Albergue 11 E

Beer (German) 2.50 E

Pilgrim meal 11 E

Curious as to how the wine tasted. If they had a wine fountain in Edmonton, I am sure it would have a longer line up than a service station that decided to sell gasoline for half price.
