Day 27 - El Acebo to Ponferrada - 16 km
Wow, we have been away from home for one month now!!
The coughing man plus about 4 snorers made for an unpleasant night. And we had planned to sleep a bit later today since we weren’t going very far. But at 6:00, someone turned on the lights and turned up the volume of the conversation. Generally the lights only go on that early if everyone is up.
So our morning didn’t start as we had hoped. Add to that: too early for breakfast so made due with a granola bar, the first town down the road had nothing open, and the trail was a steep and rocky descent. Not my best start.
But our luck changed at Molinaseca, the second town. We stopped at the first opportunity, and had bacon and eggs. Yum. And cafe con leche of course.
On we went from there, feeling better. The rest of the descent was not as dramatic, was a pleasant walk into Ponferrada. We had a treat today, a Hostal room (like a hotel but cheaper). Twin beds for 40€ for two. Most albergues are 7-10€ per bed, ours tonight is 20€ each. Pretty good deal, lovely room. No one snoring or coughing tonight. And it was ready when we arrived, so we were checked in and I was in the shower by noon! New record. Plus they supply shampoo and soap!
After our showers we went for a bite and to stock up on some groceries. Then back to the room to relax.
After a rest (getting used to Spanish siesta) we went to see the Castillo Templar museum. Very impressive. Built by the Knights Templar, then taken over by various royalty and the church.
After that, a visit to a church and then dinner. And the coughing man was at the restaurant! We were happy he was not sitting near us, even more happy not to be on his albergue tonight.
Now it’s time for bed.
Today’s lesson: private rooms are a nice treat.
